Helping Hands

Nova Scotians Helping Nova Scotians Association was established to address the negative impacts that social determinants of health have on underserved communities. These determinants include poverty, limited access or long waits to healthcare, inadequate housing, and discrimination. We aim to promote self-development among these communities by supporting the creation of diverse and inclusive environments and building capacity through organized community programs.

As a grassroots organization, we work directly with members of communities to understand their unique needs and concerns. This approach allows NSHNSA to tailor its programs and services to meet the specific challenges each community faces. By promoting self-development and building capacity, we hope to empower individuals and communities to actively improve their health and well-being.

Through our programs, youth can learn new skills, gain confidence, and explore their passions. Investing in youth development can have long-term benefits for society as a whole as young people become future leaders, innovators, and contributors to their communities. By providing opportunities for growth and development, we can help build a better future for all individuals, regardless of their background or circumstances. This can lead to better job opportunities, higher incomes, and a better quality of life overall.

Moreover, our programs also help youth to build strong relationships with their peers and mentors, which can help to enhance their social skills and emotional well-being. Still, it is essential to consider Equity, Diversity, Inclusion and Accessibility issues to create a welcoming and inclusive environment for all to thrive.

What We Do
Nova Scotians Helping Nova Scotians Association (NSHNSA) delivers community-based programs that address social determinants of health through sport, education, leadership development, food access, and community engagement initiatives.

Our work focuses on removing financial and social barriers so that individuals, youth, and families can participate fully in their communities and access opportunities that support healthy development, confidence, and leadership.

Through inclusive programming, grassroots engagement, and strategic partnerships, NSHNSA creates accessible pathways for people—particularly those from underserved communities—to build connections, develop skills, and strengthen community well-being across Nova Scotia.
