About

Through its efforts, NSHNSA hopes to reduce the impact of social determinants of health and create a more equitable society where everyone can access the resources and support they need to thrive.

Nova Scotians Helping Nova Scotians Association's vision is to create a community-focused wellness group that provides space for before and after-school programs, summer camps, community sports, meetings, group gatherings, a teen centre, cooking classes, cooking groups, and fitness classes and become an incubator hub.

Everyone has the potential to contribute positively to society, and we aim to create a space where everyone can thrive. Our programs and services support individuals in mental health, education, employment, physical activity and food security.

Building a solid community takes time, effort, and collaboration. We work closely with community organizations, government agencies, and volunteers to achieve our goals. Working together can create a better future for ourselves and future generations.

We welcome anyone who shares our vision and values to join us in our mission. Whether you're interested in volunteering, donating, or participating in our programs and services, we believe everyone can positively impact their community. Together, we can build a brighter future for Nova Scotia.

By explicitly addressing the social determinants of health, NSHNSA takes a comprehensive and holistic approach to health promotion. The organization recognizes that health is not just about individual behaviours but is also influenced by broader social, economic, and environmental factors. By providing opportunities for physical activity, community building, and skill development, NSHNSA is helping to create resilient individuals and communities better equipped to navigate life's challenges.

NSHNSA is creating a community and environment that encourages leadership, learning, exploration, and entrepreneurship by offering various programs and opportunities to develop the skills, abilities, and resources within the community not only to survive but thrive. We also address food insecurity, promote cultural education, and introduce children to new options through field trips and adventures.

We also contribute to broader efforts to create a more just and equitable society through its focus on promoting health equity and reducing disparities. Addressing social determinants of health requires a multi-sectorial approach involving many stakeholders and factors. By partnering with local organizations, community members, and government agencies, NSHNSA is working to address the structural inequities that underlie many health disparities.

Overall, Nova Scotians Helping Nova Scotians Association's work is an inspiring example of how organizations can make a meaningful impact on the health and well-being of communities by addressing social determinants of health comprehensively and collaboratively.

Sports

Sports can effectively give youth something to do and keep them engaged in positive activities. By providing access to sports programs and facilities, youth have the opportunity to learn new skills, meet new people, and engage in healthy competition. Sports can also serve as a valuable tool for building character and teaching important life skills such as teamwork, leadership, and perseverance.

In addition, sports programs can help to keep youth safe and out of trouble by giving them an alternative to risky behaviours such as substance abuse and violence. By encouraging youth to participate in sports and providing resources and support, communities can create a positive and productive outlet for young people.

We understand that poverty is a systemic issue affecting many participants, and we strive to provide access to resources and opportunities to help them by offering free programs plus, we are Kidsport and Jumpstart eligible. As well, A Business Sponsorship Option: A child can be sponsored by a business. We would be happy to advertise the sponsorship and provide a receipt for tax purposes. You will need to find a business willing to sponsor the child and provide them with our contact information to set up the sponsorship. They should email NovaScotiansHelpingNS@gmail.com with the subject line "Player Sponsorship."

Using an EDI (Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion) lens in sports is crucial for creating a safe, inclusive, and equitable environment for all athletes and members of the sports community.

Equity in sports means providing access and opportunity to all athletes regardless of their socioeconomic background, race, gender, or skill level. This can be achieved by offering free or discounted rates for those who cannot afford the cost of attendance, providing a range of skill levels for different age groups and abilities, and ensuring that facilities and equipment are accessible and safe for all.

Diversity in sports involves creating an inclusive environment that welcomes athletes from different ethnic, cultural, and religious backgrounds. This can be promoted by having coaches and staff from diverse backgrounds who can provide cultural competence and celebrate the differences among the athletes.

Inclusion means ensuring that everyone is respected and valued for who they are and that they can participate fully in our programs. This can be achieved by creating a supportive and welcoming environment, promoting positive communication, and addressing discrimination, harassment, or bullying.

Overall, using sports as a vehicle to give youth something to do can significantly benefit both individuals and communities. Playing on a team and having a support system can help increase self-esteem and reduce feelings of isolation and loneliness. By promoting physical activity, social development, and positive behaviour, sports can help foster healthier and more resilient young people who are better equipped to face future challenges.
