About

Nova Scotians Helping Nova Scotians Association (NSHNSA) operates as a community wellness hub, integrating sport, food access, leadership development, and community events to improve health outcomes and reduce barriers for youth and families across Halifax Regional Municipality and surrounding communities in Nova Scotia.
Through year-round programming, NSHNSA creates accessible opportunities for youth, families, and community members to stay active, build leadership skills, access food support, and strengthen community connections.
Mission
Nova Scotians Helping Nova Scotians Association works to reduce barriers to participation in sport, wellness, leadership development, and community engagement by providing inclusive, accessible programming that supports the health and well-being of youth, families, and communities.
Guiding Principles
NSHNSA programs are guided by the following principles:
• Equity, Diversity, Inclusion & Accessibility (EDIA)
• Barrier-free access to sport and recreation
• Community-led program development
• Youth leadership and mentorship opportunities
• Safe, welcoming, and inclusive spaces
• Strengthening community belonging and social connection
Community Need
Communities across Halifax Regional Municipality and surrounding areas continue to face growing challenges related to:
• affordability
• food insecurity
• access to recreation
• social isolation
• limited safe community spaces
Many youth and families face barriers to participating in sport and wellness programs due to financial constraints, transportation limitations, and lack of accessible community spaces.
At the same time, Nova Scotia’s rapidly growing and culturally diverse population highlights the importance of inclusive and culturally responsive programming that promotes belonging and leadership opportunities.

NSHNSA programs respond directly to these needs by providing free, barrier-free opportunities for sport, recreation, food support, mentorship, and community engagement.
By delivering programming in priority neighbourhoods and welcoming participants from diverse backgrounds, NSHNSA helps create safe environments where youth and families can connect, stay active, and access support.
